Album: Down There
Label: Paw Tracks
The first official solo LP from Animal Collective’s Avey Tare sounds like, well, pretty much how you’d expect the solo effort of an Animal Collective member to sound. It’s interesting and full of weirdly dark sounds, off-kilter beats, and Tare’s echoing vocals are an instrument more than a vehicle for conveying words. Still, it sounds a little empty without the other members; you’ll find fewer memorable hooks and more hazy meandering here. “3 Umbrellas” feels suspiciously like a B-side from the Merriwether recording sessions, notably upbeat and carried by a driving toy piano sound. Check out catchy “Heather in the Hospital” and the cool grooving beats in “Lucky 1.”
